Water Heaters - Buy or Rent?

Many homeowners in South-Western Ontario rent their hot water heater from Reliance. In the past, a lot of people rented their water heater from Union Gas (now Enbridge). You had just one bill which included all the gas you used for heating and hot water. The bill also included your hot water tank rental. It was a simple and very popular.

Union Gas (Enbridge) sold its’ hot water tank rental business to Reliance. Homeowners now get a separate bill from Reliance for the rental of their hot water heater.

Buying your water heater and getting out of your rental contract has many advantage. The rental payments will normally pay for your water heater in about seven years. The water heater lasts for ten to fifteen years. So buying a water heater works out to be a pretty good deal.

When you rent a water heater and you have a problem, you can only call Reliance. It’s up to them if they fix it or replace it. If you own your water heater and you have a problem you can call any plumbing contractor you like.
