Higher Rates for Small Solar Projects

House with 4 kW Solar Panel Installation

Over 20,000 homeowners have already installed solar panel systems in Ontario and are taking advantage of the attractive rates being paid by their utility. The Ontario microFIT program guarantees that you can sell the power you produce at a great rate over the next 20 years. The current rate being paid is 29.4¢ per kWh for systems that are between 6 kW and 10 kW. That will produce enough income to give homeowners a 10%+ return on their solar investment. Where else can you get that kind of return, guaranteed by the Ontario Government?

Smaller residential rooftop solar arrays that are less than 6 kW in size now will receive 31.3¢ per kWh. Many homes that are smaller, or have a lot of trees, may not have room for a 10 kW system on their roof. The microFIT rate is 6.5% higher for smaller project so they can also make economic sense. Smaller systems also mean that your upfront investment is lower.

The home pictured above features a 4 kW system. Even with a smaller roof area, this homeowner can produce green energy and sell it back to the grid.
